Chennai: Top stars missing from domestic events sounds like cricket, but it's actually happening in hockey as well. The MCC Murugappa Gold Cup is going on in Chennai right now but the players in the national team have been exempted. They are at a training camp in Barog in Himachal Pradesh. However, the tournament organizers and the fans aren't too happy about this situation. "I really want to see international players like Dhanraj Pillay and Mukesh Kumar play on this ground," said a fan in Chennai. The Indian Hockey Federation is already concentrating on preparing the Indian team for the Champions Trophy in August and the Asia Cup in September. "Right now they are at a hill station and are busy preparing for the Champions Trophy," said J Krishnamurthy, Joint Secretary, India Hockey Federation. However, NDTV has learnt that there could be some reluctance to allow international-level players to play on an astro-turf that's old. Whatever the real reason, fans in Chennai have been deprived of some good hockey.
