Indian women's team now sets its sights on the Asian Games

New Delhi:

It was probably India's finest moment at Manchester when Mamta Kharab scored the golden goal in the final against England. After various felicitations, today it was finally the turn of the Women's Hockey Federation to honour the 16-member team. The total amount of cash prizes announced for the team now add up to almost Rs 2 crore, but the problem of funds and infrastructure continues. "We have made an appeal through the media and we hope that once you publicize it, a lot of money will come into the sport. If not now, it will come in the future," said Vidya Stokes, President of the Indian Women's Hockey Federation. However critics say that the win at Manchester might just have been a flash in the pan, given that earlier this year the team had failed to qualify for the Women's World Cup. Their next test will be at the Asian Games. "The main aim for us now is to win in the Asian Games and at Asiad. We will have to put much more effort to win at the Asian games. We will have to practice day and night. But we are confident of winning a medal at Asiad," said Surajlata Devi, the captain of the Indian women's team. With the Indian men's hockey team going in as defending champions at the Asian games, a double hockey gold seems a delicious possibility.
