Kolkata:

Indian Oil overcame a spirited challenge from defending champions Punjab Police to win 1-0 while Border Security Force, Jalandhar and Army XI got past their rivals with ease to earn a berth in the semi-final of the 108th All India Beighton Cup hockey tournament. Indian Oil, desperate to notch up a victory to move up to the last four stage from group B, scored the all-important goal in the 47th minute through Deepak Thakur, which sealed the fate for the holders. Punjab Police, who had finished 3-3 against Army XI yesterday, toiled hard to restore parity, but failed to break the ice in face of resolute defending by the winners. In the other quarter-final matches, formidable Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) drew with Air India 2-2, BSF outplayed last year's losing finalists CRPF 2-1 while Army XI blanked Bombay XI 2-0 to settle for a place in the semi final. PSB, who had already ensured a place in last four and emerged champions from group A, will take on Indian Oil, while group B topper Army XI would face BSF in semi final matches to be played on April 1.
