India take on Dutch in semis

Kuala Lumpur:

With two sparkling wins under their belt, India would look to carry their form against a formidable Netherlands and book a berth in the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament. The Dutch finished second in their pool to set up a semifinal clash with India on Friday after New Zealand and the Netherlands played out a lacklustre goalless draw to deprive Pakistan a place in the last four. Realising well the folly of being carried away by the wins, India coach Vasudevan Baskaran said India must deliver the goods when it matters the most. "In the knock-out stage, it all depends on how well you play on the day and not so much your previous performance," said Baskaran. "From here on, anything is possible," he said referring to the prospect of India reaching the final of the tournament for the first time in 11 years. India, who won the competition thrice in 1985, 1991 and 1995, are exuding confidence after their fine showing against Malaysia (5-2) and Korea (3-0) that followed the 1-4 reverse to Australia in their pool opener. "Everything is falling into place now, though I concede that we still need to improve in a few areas. But then, our focus is on the World Cup in September and this tournament has helped us to gauge the form, fitness and ability of our players," Baksaran said. Going into the semi-finals, Baskaran's major concern is Tejbir Singh who is shaping into a key player. Tejbir received a yellow card suspension against Korea in the 63rd minute and in the knockout stage, India cannot afford to lose him. (PTI)
