Abbeville:
Abbeville (France), Sep 27 (PTI) India registered a thumping 4-0 win against Kazakhstan in the World Cup hockey qualifying tournament in their last league match last night and are just a win away from making it to the main tournament. With their second successive big win, following a 5-0 rout of France, India finished their league engagements with 10 points (three wins, two defeats and a draw) to be placed third in Pool A on better goal difference. England, with 18 points, topped the group followed by Ukraine on 11 points. Ireland too finished on 10 points. India will now figure in the playoffs for the 5-8 place. The top seven teams qualify for the World Cup to be held in Perth from November 26 to December 8 next year. Continuing with the brilliant form that they displayed against France, the Indian women raced to a 3-0 lead at the half-time. Surinder Kaur opened the account in the 16th minute through an indirect penalty corner. Five minutes later Amandeep Kaur made it 2-0 by converting a penalty corner. Centre forward Sanggai Ibemahal Chanu increased the lead in the 32nd minute through a field goal and Suman Bala struck the final goal, converting another penalty corner, two minutes into the second half. India could have increased the margin in the 50th minute but Jyoti Sunita Kullu missed a penalty stroke as the stick slipped out of her hand. Team manager Dr Rupa Saini commended the girls on their 'wonderful' performance. "The captain and goalkeeper Tingolima Chanu once again put up a sterling show," she said.
