New Delhi: Goalkeepers are like wicket-keepers, not usually noticed till they make a mistake. Such is the case of Helen Mary as well. The goalkeeper of the women's hockey team has been around for almost a decade and many of the team's recent successes are thanks to her efforts. India's recent win in the tri-series event in Russia was thanks in part to Helen's contribution. India won the event on goal difference - they scored 13 goals and conceded 8. Helen is now looking to the challenges ahead, but it's the past which motivates her. "We played very well in the finals of the 1998 Asian Games but we were unlucky. Our second half game with South Africa and the Commonwealth Games were memorable as well," said Helen. She believes that having a specialist coach has helped improve her goalkeeping techniques, something team coach M K Kaushik and fellow goalkeepers agree with. Goalkeeping Coach M R Negi, said, "Helen Mary is the best goalkeeper we have at present and also the most promising. She adapts to any situation, is a quick learner and has very good coordination skills." Helen has been a part of the team for nearly a decade now, and while the women's team may not be as high-profile as their male counterparts, that has not lessened her passion for hockey.
