Debate: Will Charlesworth help Indian hockey?

New Delhi:

Ric Charlesworth, 55, is a former cricketer and a hockey player from Western Australia. He's also a renowned high performance coach and currently in the news for his link-up with the Indian Hockey Federation.

As a cricketer, Charlesworth played 47 first class games for Western Australia between 1972 and 1979 and came close to an Australia call-up. In his U-19 days, he had captained his state side.

His calling, however, was hockey. He was considered among the best of his times in the 1970s and 80s. He represented Australia in five Olympic games between 1972 and 1988.

After his retirement at the Seoul Olympics of 1988, Charlesworth coached the Australia women's hockey team. Under him, the team won successive World Cups in 1994 and 1998, four successive Champions Trophies, two Olympic golds in 1996 and 2000, and the Commonwealth Games gold in 1998.

Charlesworth was the New Zealand cricket team's high performance coach between 2005 and 2007. His exit from the job wasn't on the best terms. There were reports of problems between him and some of the senior Kiwi players.

Given these credentials, do you think Charlesworth can turn things around for Indian hockey?

While New Zealand's cricketers do not think highly of him, the Aussie's record as a hockey coach speaks for itself.

However, issues beyond coaching need to be addressed in Indian hockey. Also, Charlesworth has hinted that he won't be interested in coaching junior Indian teams, which the IHF wants him to do.

In such a scenario, should Charlesworth be brought in?
