Coach did not want me: Charlesworth

New Delhi:

Indian hockey's Technical Advisor Ric Charlesworth tonight said that he was not surprised by the team's failure to qualify for the Olympics and blamed coach Joaquim Carvalho for sidelining him from the Chile tournament.

Charlesworth said he wanted to help the team in the Olympic qualifiers, but did not get the go ahead from the IHF as Carvalho did not want him in Santiago.

After India suffered a 2-0 loss to Great Britain in the final of the qualifiers and failed to qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 80 years, eyebrows were raised as to why Charlesworth was not sent to Chile along with the Indian team.

Charlesworth said the original plan was that he would go to Chile for the Olympic qualifiers, but IHF did not provide him a return ticket to India from Australia.

"I am aware of the result...Very disappointing but not such a surprise...I always said it was 50/50.

"The plan was always for me to accompany the team but I remain stranded in Perth awaiting a ticket to return to India. I believe the coach did not want me to be involved and I could not convince Mr Gill that it was important," Charlesworth told PTI today.

The Aussie great, however, said that his work was progressing well in India until he was stuck up in Perth.

"Until I became stranded in Perth I thought my work was progressing in India...I had identified many things that need to be rectified," he said.
