Germany's narrow win over Holland has put Pakistan in a must-win position in their last league match of the World Cup hockey tournament.

Kuala Lumpur:

The race for semi-final berths from Pool 'A' in the World Cup hockey tournament has reached an interesting phase. Germany's narrow 1-0 win over defending champions Holland today put Pakistan in a must-win position in their last league match. Pakistan defeated Spain 2-0 earlier in the day to move to 12 points from four wins and two losses, but now must beat Germany by at least a two-goal margin in their last league encounter on Tuesday to make it to the last four. Germany lead their pool with 15 points and a better goal average than Pakistan, while Holland are second placed on 13 and have a relatively easy opposition in South Africa in their last league match. Argentina, who defeated New Zealand 3-1 in another Pool 'A' match are also in the race and have the same probability as that of Pakistan. Argentina next face Spain, who too have an outside chance of making the grade. In an inconsequential match, South Africa defeated Belgium 3-0. (PTI)
