India have lost their opening encounter of the 15th Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament at the Bukit Zalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The match against the Olympic Champions Australia was billed as the first real test for the newly appointed Indian coach Bhaskaran.However, the men in blue failed to hit their straps as the team succumbed to a demoralizing 4-1 defeat. At half time, Australia were leading 2-1, and the Aussies, who were missing some key players, continued to assert their dominance in the second half and ended the game with a comfortable win.India's plays its next league game against Malaysia on Monday.Kiwis edge past Argentina Meanwhile, in another group match, New Zealand won a battle of set-pieces against Argentina, defeating the South American nation 3-2.New Zealand team manager Peter Miskimmin described the game as a "match of two halves," with Argentina dominating the first session before yielding ground in the second-half. He added that the match was a dress rehearsal for the World Cup in September when the two teams are slated to meet in the first match. On the other hand, Argentine coach Vigil Sergio Roberto said that his players barely had 26 hours to recover from the long flight and were tired in the second-half. However, he added that they would be ready and charged up for their next game against the Dutch. (PTI)
