New Delhi:

A last minute goal by Michael Brennan dashed India's hopes as Australia won the Olympic men's hockey Pool B match between the two sides 4-3 today. The thrilling contest saw India bouncing back from 1-3 down to level the score 3-3 before Brennan's goal just a few seconds before the hooter left India cap the day on a disappointing note. India, who were on three points from three matches in the competition, now need to win their remaining matches - against New Zealand on Saturday and Argentina on August 23 - by big margins to have some hope of qualifying for the semifinals from the pool. Thrilling encounterThe fast paced and tension-filled match saw a lot of drama in the last few minutes when both the sides were locked at 3-3. A yellow card to Dhanraj Pillay for a minor infringement reduced India to 10-men for the last five minutes and although the side tried hard to keep the Aussies at bay they failed in their effort. Deepak Thakur (6th), Gagan Ajit Singh (51st), Arjun Halappa (52nd) scored for the Indians while Troy Elder (11th), Jamie Dwyer (37th), Michael McCann (50th) and Brennan sounded the board for the Australians. A win in the match would have helped India take a giant step towards ensuring a place in the semifinal. Perfect startThakur's goal in the sixth minute provided the perfect platform for the side to go for the kill. But that was not to be as Australia, bronze medalists in the Sydney Games, came back strongly equalising in the 11th minute and soon after the complexion of the game changed with the Australians dictating the terms with some authoritative display. The two sides went into the half-time tied at 1-1. But Jamie Dwyer made it 2-1 for Australia when he beat the Indian goalkeeper in the 38th minute.Disappointing finish Michael Mcnan made it 3-1 for Australia in the 50th minute. Gagan Ajit Singh then pulled one back to make the score 3-2 in the same minute. Arjun Halappa made it 3-3 for India in the 52nd minute. The resurgent Indians riding on a good move by Dhanraj came close to scoring in the very next minute, but Gagan Ajit's poor trapping inside the circle denied India the lead. However, Brennan's goal just a few seconds before the hooter went off, ended the day for India on a disappointing note.
