London: The winner of this year's World Match Play championship will receive 1 million pounds (US$1.56 million), the richest prize ever in US or European golf. Total prize money for the 12-player, Oct. 16-19 tournament at Wentworth will be 2.3 million pounds (US$3.588 million), organizers said on Thursday. The defending champion is South Africa's Ernie Els, who collected 250,000 pounds (US$390,000) as last year's winner and organizers said he had already pledged to play. Tiger Woods has also been invited as the world No. 1 and the other 10 players will be taken from a ranking list based on performances in the four majors - the Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship.
