Los Angeles:

Tiger Woods will undergo surgery on his ailing left knee and miss the rest of the PGA Tour season, the golf superstar said in an article posted on his website on Wednesday.

The news comes two days after Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a thrilling US Open playoff to earn his 14th major championship.

According to the website, Woods will have reconstructive surgery on his left anterior cruciate ligament. The time off for that rehabilitation will also allow time for a double stress fracture in his left tibia to heal.

The stress fracture, which was discovered just prior to the May 29 Memorial tournament, was attributed to Woods' intense rehabilitation schedule in the wake of arthroscopic surgery on the same knee in April.

The scheduled date of the surgery was not given, but the article said doctors had assured Woods that the stress fractures will heal with time and that the long-term prognosis for his knee is very good.

"I know much was made of my knee throughout last week," said Woods, who was noted to be limping and grimacing in pain at times throughout the US Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

"It was important for me that I disclose my condition publicly at an appropriate time.

"I wanted to be very respectful of the USGA (US Golf Association) and their incredibly hard work and make sure the focus was on the US Open.

"Now it is clear that the right thing to do is to listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee."
