San Diego:

Whipping boys to party-poopers! Well, that sounds like the two surprise leaders after round one at the US Open. Streelman and Hicks got the lead but Tiger Woods still had all the attention! The world number one, playing his first event after a knee surgery three months ago, had a nightmare start, but he did enough to make up and finish in the top 20. Indian-born Swede Daniel Chopra was tied for 31st, 5 strokes off the lead

A disastrous start for Tiger Woods, The World number One hooking his opening tee shot to make his first double bogey since last September. Clearly the soreness in his knee wasn't the only concern.

"I could walk 18 holes. Guess I don't need a cart yet. But you could not ask for a worse start than I got off too, I mean a six on the first hole right out of the gate and I said 'you are going to make bogeys out here I just made two on the first hole," Tiger said.

But recovery is known to be Tiger's forte and he made 3 birdies including this one on the 9th to finish the opening round, tied for 19th at 1 over, 4 shots off the lead.

"As of right now I'm four back to make two double bogeys and a three putt and only be four back that's a great position to be in and I know I can clean that up tomorrow" the World No. 1 announced.

World number 2 Phil Mickelson bogeyed 3 straight holes on the front nine but recovered thanks to 4 birdies including this on the back nine. Mickelson finishing tied for 12th at level par.

But two relative unknowns led the superstars in the opening round. Americans Kevin Streelman and Justin Hicks, neither among the top 600 in the world ranking, shot a 3-under to share the opening lead.
