Honolulu: Michelle Wie will return to Japan in November to play in the Casio World Open, where she narrowly missed the cut last year competing against men. A year ago, she received about $1.5 million in appearance money from the Casio World Open. Wie, who is playing in the Sony Open, opened with a 79 on Thursday. That left the 16-year-old with slim hopes of making the cut in the PGA event. She has played seven times against men without making the cut, although Casio was her best chance. She bogeyed the last two holes to miss the cut by one shot. Wie played before large crowds in Japan and has a huge appeal in Asia because of her Korean heritage. This week, the Hawaii-born teenager conducted television interviews in English and Korean, her first language. She also did an interview in Japanese, which she has been studying for two years. Wie is expected to play twice more on the PGA Tour this year, although the events have not been determined. (AP)
