Houston:

Bubba Watson rocketed to the top of the leaderboard in the third round of the Shell Houston Open on Saturday.

The third round was delayed by more than six hours on Saturday due to torrential rain.

When the course finally dried out the golfers found the greens soft and responsive.

Marco Dawson was one of the first players out there and he chipped in from below the green to start a bogey-less round of 69.

Good start

Last year's winner Stuart Appleby started his day with a birdie as well.

Appleby had a solid birdie on the first hole and went on to post four more before his round was suspended due to darkness.

He was out chasing Johnson Wagner, who flew up to the top of the leaderboard with great play early.

Wagner's birdies on seven and nine were part of a five hole run that dropped him to nine under par and another pair of birdies on the back side left him with a clean card of 64.

He went into the clubhouse at 11 under par, one stroke behind Jeff Maggert, who started his day with three birdies in the first four holes.

Moving ahead

Maggert had his round suspended due to darkness but not before moving a stroke ahead of Wagner with a birdie on the 14th.

Adam Scott made it to the 17th before his round ended prematurely as well.

Scott was in commanding form on Saturday with seven birdies that took him all the way to 11 under.

Watson started the day at six under and went in for the night in first place at 15 under par after 10 birdies and just one bogey in 15 holes.

John Mallinger has quite a way to catch up with Watson but he had to be heartened by chipping in for eagle on the 15th hole.
