Jerez, Spain: Ian Poulter holds a one shot lead after the opening round of the Volvo Masters in Jerez, Spain on Thursday, the final event of the European Tour season. The Englishman fired a bogey-free, eight-under par round of 65 to leave him clear of Australian Peter Lonard in second place. A shot further back is Ireland's Paul McGinley, while the newly crowned European number one Retief Goosen is well poised on four-under par. it was perfect golfing conditions at the Montecastillo Golf Club in Jerez in southern Spain. And a pretty perfect shot from Colin Montgomerie, his second on the sixth hole would set him up for an easy birdie. But he could manage just a one under par 71. Bernhard Langer enjoying a great year on the tour, had three birdies including one on the sixth hole after a great approach shot. He finished with a 69. Retief Goosen has already wrapped up the European title. He had a 50-foot eagle on the third en route to a four under par 68, which is four shots off the lead. Goosen's playing partner Padraig Harrington improved his chances of finishing second in Europe with a five under par 67. That got him at joint fourth on the leader board. Another Irishman in contention is Paul McGinley who like Harrington also finished at 67. The man whom everyone was chasing though was England's Ian Poulter. He had an eight under par 64 including an eagle on 16th and a final biride on 17th.
