Shillong:

Meghalaya is holding its first ever professional golf tournament in capital Shillong. The Shillong Open has 101 professionals and 10 amateurs participating in the tournament. But more than just golf, this event will be remembered for being the first one where professional sportsmen will give part of their earnings to a charity. This effort is aimed at creating awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Northeast. "The PGAI tour is the first time a sporting event has been associated to the cause of PGAI. Each player has been spoken to and asked for a portion of their prize money towards this cause," said Vinayak Krishna, Head, PGAI. The event also features some of the big names from the Indian tour, including 2004-05 Champion Golfer of the Year Mukesh Kumar, who are all enjoying the experience. "This golf course is natural, it's amazing. They held tournaments 15-20 years ago, but since then, golfing has changed so much, sponsors are coming forward," said SSP Chaurasia, professional golfer. The Shillong Golf Course had started when golf was a leisure game and now with golf becoming a professional sport, the course needs renovation and maintenance. But players say the charm is in its natural setting and the heritage needs to be retained.
