Jesper Parnevik entered the day with a three-stroke lead but saw it quickly evaporate. He bogeyed the second hole and didn't make a single birdie before the turn.
Justin Leonard, who took the Texas Open in 2000 and 2001, started the day four shots behind Parnevik but drew even with a birdie putt on the sixth hole.
Mathias Gronberg would also spend part of the day atop the leaderboard. Gronberg nearly holed this chip-and-run for eagle at the 11th but could not break par on the last four holes and ended up with a 69 and a share of third place.
Fellow Swede Daniel Chopra would take the other share of third. Chopra had also spent part of the day in first but missed this eagle putt on 14 and bogeyed 16 to close a card of 69.
Leonard took the lead for himself with a short, slow birdie putt on the par-three 13th hole. Parnevik had three birdies, two bogeys and a par in a six hole span on the back nine before sending this tee shot on 17 onto the green and well within birdie range.
After he sank it to draw even with Leonard, the Texan had a chance to win on the closing hole but his 14 foot birdie putt broke off the line just before the cup and missed the hole, sending the tournament into a playoff.
On the first extra hole, Parnevik took an unplayable lie after driving into the trees left of the fairway. But he hit a 153-yard approach to three feet to set up a par.
Leonard had sent his approach into the greenside rough but sent his chip inches wide left of the hole before settling for par. He had a chance to win it again on the second playoff hole, but his five foot birdie try lipped out and forced the duo onto the par-three 17th.
Parnevik couldn't replicate his tee shot from earlier in the day and left himself with a 28 foot putt for birdie - he rolled it perfectly on line but the ball came up short.
Leonard had left himself much closer and overcame his 0-4 record in play-offs to sink his birdie and win the Texas Open, joining Arnold Palmer (1960-62) as the only other player to take the title three times.
