Pinehurst:
Retief Goosen moved within 18 holes of his third US Open victory Saturday, making three late birdies for a 1-under 69 and a three-stroke lead at 3 under on Pinehurst's difficult No. 2 course. Jason Gore and Olin Browne, tied with Goosen for the second-round lead, shot 72s to drop to even par. Michael Campbell (71) and Mark Hensby (72) were 1 over, David Toms (70) was 2 over, and Tiger Woods (72) was in a four-player group at 3 over. All will be chasing Goosen, who briefly surrendered the lead with a double bogey on the par-4 14th, but came back immediately with back-to-back birdies to move back under par and into the lead. He finished the round with a 25-foot putt from off the 18th green that barely dropped in for only the second sub-par round of the day. The South African star is trying to become the first player to win consecutive US Opens since Curtis Strange in 1988-89. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
