Hawaii: Ernie Els fired an eight-under-par 65 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Mercedes Championship over the beautiful Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. Els finished on a 25-under total of 194 to tie the PGA Tour record in relation to par for 54 holes - Gay Brewer also had a 25-under-par total through three rounds at the 1967 Pensacola Open, a tournament that no longer exists. But as well as Els was playing on Saturday, KJ Choi was better. The South Korean shot a 62 to keep Els within range and set up a shootout between the two in the final round on Sunday. Former US Open champion Retief Goosen carded a 66 but was still seven strokes off the lead, with Bob Estes (70), Chris Riley (67) and Jerry Kelly (67) another stroke adrift. (AP)
