Coceres leads in John Deere Classic

Illinois: Heavy rain delayed the second round of the John Deere Classic for nearly 3 hours on Friday, saturating the TPC at Deere Run and making the greens almost too slow. Briny Baird holed a birdie putt on the 11th hole to move to 3-under for the tournament, but wasn't able to finish his round. He stopped after 13 holes at 4-under. Stewart Cink found himself in trouble on the 5th hole, but used a fine approach shot to save par and remain at 7-under. He shot six-under 65 and was in a share of fourth place at 7-under. Scott Hoch moved to 4-under on the 12th hole with a long birdie putt. His day ended after the 12th at 6-under. John Morgan was one player to complete his round. He was one of eight players tied for fourth place at 7-under after a two-under round of 69. Jose Coceres, a former caddie who taught himself to play with clubs fashioned from branches, went into the second round holding a one shot lead after a blistering opening nine-under 62, a career-best. The 40-year-old Argentine won twice in 2001, but a broken arm wiped out most of 2002 and led to inconsistent play last year. He picked up a birdie on the fourth hole and another on the 10th to take him to 12-under. But he dropped a shot on the 11th, which proved to be his last hole of the day. He'll resume his second round on Saturday morning, still holding a one shot lead. (AP)
