Buick Invitational: Atwal makes cut

San Diego:

A final hole birdie saved his bacon as Arjun Atwal huffed and puffed before finally making the cut in the USD 5.3 million Buick Invitation golf tournament here.

The 10th tee starter approached the ninth -- his final --hole at a precarious three-over before managing a birdie to total two-over 146 and squeeze himself just inside the cut line at tied 65th.

Indian-born Swede Daniel Chopra had earlier withdrawn following his horrendous opening round of 76.

Atwal looked in serious trouble at the South Course of Torrey Pines and was one-over by the time he was through with his back nine.

Things got worse on resumption as Atwal bogeyed the first, second and fifth holes to go four-under. The sixth hole birdie arrested the slide but Atwal was not out of danger yet and he finally heaved a sigh of relief after the birdie on the par-five ninth kept him in fray for weekend action.

Overnight leader Camilo Villegas (133) carded 70 for a one-shot lead over John Rollins who carded a sensational eight-under 64.
