Honolulu:

Back in the elite league again, Arjun Atwal got off to a sedate start in his first US PGA Tour event this year and his opening round of one-under 69 placed him tied 24th at the USD 5.4 million Sony Open here.

The 10th tee starter parred the entire back nine before running into a bumpy front nine even though the Orlando-based Indian, who worked his way through the Nationwide Tour to regain his US PGA Tour card, never allowed circumstances get the better of him.

On his front nine, Atwal bogeyed the first and fifth holes, just about managing to squeeze in a birdie on the third as well.

At one-over after 15 holes, Atwal birdied the seventh to get even-par and signed off with a birdie as well to bring home a sub-par card.

Daniel Chopra, however, had to settle for a one-over 71 to lie tied 51st after the Indian-born Swede got off to a nightmarish start at the Waialae Country Club.

Chopra began with back-to-back bogeys and from there, he was pre-occupied with a damage control exercise. The ninth hole birdie was part-compensation but he didn't have another and parred the entire back nine to finish over-par.

Low scores were not exactly abundant in the first round but Shigeki Maruyama still blasted a five-under 65 for a one shot lead over Geoff Ogilvy, Boo Weekley, Brian Gay, Webb Simpson and Nathan Green who huddle in the second place after their identical 66s.
