Playa del Carmen, Mexico:

Arjun Atwal is set to miss the cut at the Mayakoba Golf Classic following his nightmarish opening round of eight-over 78 which has him at 128th position in the $3.5 million PGA Tour event here.

Atwal began in right earnest as he birdied the opening hole but did not get another chance to rejoice at the El Camaleon Golf Club.

Atwal bogeyed half of the 18 holes, four on his front nine and five on his way back. Only two golfers -- Mauricio Azcue (81) and Troy Kelly (82)-- did worse than Atwal. Kelly in fact withdrew after the horrendous round.

Bo Van Pelt blasted seven-under 63 to open up a two-shot lead over Chris Riley and Jarrod Lyle.
