Atwal pulls out of SRF Championship

New Delhi: A walkover from an indisposed top seed Arjun Atwal saw fifth seed Vijay Kumar advance to the final along with Rahil Gangjee in the Rs 10-lakh SRF Matchplay Golf Championship today. For Atwal, who pulled out because of a heat stroke, it turned out to be a disappointing end to the event, the only one in the Hero Honda Indian PGA Tour played in the matchplay format. In the other match between two of the most popular players on the Tour, No 18 Rahil Gangjee overcame sixth seed Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia 2&1 at the par-72 Delhi Golf Club course. Two-time European PGA Tour winner Atwal, who played a thriller against Jaiveer Virk last afternoon, started feeling the effect of the heat this morning. "He threw up several times since morning and was in no shape to play. The doctors think it is the combination of the medicines he is taking for the throat infection and the heat of Thursday's double round," said Amandeep Johl, who is staying with the top seed. Atwal has a condition called the polyp of vocal chords because of which he has lost his voice completely, and might require a minor surgery if it does not get better by tomorrow. Fifth seed Vijay Kumar said he was happy to reach the final but admitted, "It would have been lot better if I could have beaten Arjun. I am feeling bad for him as he was playing some great golf and it could have been an exciting semi-final". (PTI)
