Solberg wins six stages at Mexico

Mexico City:

World champion Petter Solberg of Norway won all six stages on the second day of the Mexico World Championship Rally, but Markko Martin of Estonia stayed in first place overall. Martin, driving a Ford, finished third on Saturday, behind Carlos Sainz of Spain in a Citroen. Sainz is in second place overall, while Solberg moved up to sixth overall in a Subaru. Martin leads with a time of 2 hours, 48 minutes, 9.4 seconds, just 14.4 seconds ahead of Sainz. The Norwegian immediately set about clawing back the five minutes 40 seconds he was docked, and did so in style by winning all six stages. That heroic display cut his deficit on leader Markko Martin to 3mins 51.7secs and Solberg is refusing to give up on a podium finish, with 3mins 23.6secs separating him from third-place man Francois Duval. At least Solberg will cut the gap on championship leader Sebastien Loeb, whose hopes of a hat-trick of victories went up in smoke. Solberg's penalty seemingly left the way clear for Loeb to extend his lead in the title chase but, having won in Monte Carlo and Sweden, the Citroen driver suffered a terminal oil leak which forced him out of the lead and into retirement. The rally is now led by Ford's Estonian driver Martin, who is the chief beneficiary of the misfortunes encountered by Loeb and Solberg. He has a 14.5 seconds advantage over Citroen's former world champion Carlos Sainz with Francois Duval, driving a Ford, third. The rally, on its first appearance as a world championship event, has begun to take its toll, with Marcus Gronholm, Peugeot's two-time former champion, down in sixth after power steering failure. The rally concludes with the final five stages. (AP)
