Schumacher triumphs in Brazil

Sao Paolo:

It's a brand new car but the same old story - no one in Formula One can match Michael Schumacher and Ferrari. The reigning world Formula One champion from Germany drove the new 2002 Ferrari to victory in its debut race yesterday, capturing the Brazilian Grand Prix by .588 of a second over younger brother Ralf after they duelled through the final 55 laps."I was pretty much perfect until the end," Michael Schumacher said. "We didn't suffer any problems. We're probably not quite there yet but we're not that far off." Schumacher completed 71 laps on the 4.309km Interlagos layout in 1hr 31mins, 43.663secs at 200.098 kmph. "I could have gone a bit faster," the elder Schumacher said. "I'm much more optimistic about our performance on circuits where we struggled last year, even if there's room for improvement." The 2002 Ferrari, which underwent final tests a week earlier in Barcelona, lived up to advance billing with aerodynamic improvements making for easier handling over the bumpy 15-turn layout. "The new Ferrari has proved slightly better than the old one," said Britain's David Coulthard, who finished third in his McLaren yesterday, a year after winning here. Triumphant Schumacher won his 55th Formula Ona race, and took a 24-16 points lead over brother Ralf after three of 17 races in his quest for a record-matching fifth drivers crown. (PTI)
