Suzuka, Japan:

Michael Schumacher and Ferrari capped a record-breaking year on Sunday when the German powered the Italian car to win the Japanese Grand Prix for his 11th victory of the Formula One season. The five-time world champion paced a Ferrari 1-2 finish and won his third consecutive Japanese Grand Prix. Schumacher started from pole position and covered 53 laps of the 5.821-kilometer (3.636-mile) Suzuka circuit in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 59.91 seconds to secure a podium finish for every race of the year. It was the 64th GP win of his career, extending his record. He finished the season with 144 points, also record. Rubens Barrichello, who led for a lap when teammate Schumacher made a pitstop, was half a second behind in second place, securing Ferrari's ninth 1-2 finish of the season and a 1-2 finish in the drivers' standings. Schumacher slowed considerably in the final lap after leading by nearly 10 seconds for most of the last 10 laps, however, unlike the U.S. Grand Prix two weeks ago, Schumacher remained in front. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen placed third and Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth in a Williams, clinching third place in the 2002 drivers' standings. Japan's Takuma Sato claimed fifth place to rousing cheers from the local crowd and finished a lap ahead of sixth place Jenson Button in a Renault. (AP)
