Montreal:

Ralf Schumacher earned Williams their first pole of the season on Saturday. Schumacher set a new track record in securing top spot - one minute 12.275 seconds his best effort. Jenson Button will accompany Ralf on the front row. The British BAR was somewhat fortunate to steal second place - more on that later. One minute 12.341 seconds the British BAR man's fastest. Third on the grid - Italian Renault driver Jarno Trulli thanks to his quickest of one minute 13.023 seconds. Prior to Saturday, Juan Pablo Montoya achieved Williams' last pole - that coming in the 2003 German Grand Prix. The Colombian was fourth-fastest here. Fernando Alonso - the second Renault man was fifth-best on the day. All this condemned Ferrari to their worst day for of the season. Michael Schumacher was sixth-fastest - his poorest effort of the current campaign - teammate Rubens Barrichello was just behind him. And it could have been even bleaker - but for Takuma Sato's late mishap. The Japanese BAR man was quicker than Button through the first timed sector. But his hopes of escorting Ralf Schumacher evaporated with a 360 degree spin on the final corner. (AP)
