Hockenheim:

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen kept up the pressure on Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso of Renault by claiming pole on Saturday for the German Grand Prix. The Finnish driver will share the front row of the grid with Jenson Button in his BAR-Honda with Alonso having to settle for third place for the start of Sunday's race in Hockenheim. Raikkonen swept to pole with a lap time of one minute 14.320 seconds, almost half a second quicker than Button. A good result in Sunday's race would help Raikkonen close the gap on Alonso in the standings. For the moment at least however Raikkonen is relieved to have completed qualifying successfully, following disasters in the last two races. The McLaren driver currently stands 26 points behind Alonso with 10 points awarded to the winner of Sunday's grand prix. (AP)
