Monte Carlo:

After winning the first race of the Formula One season, Kimi Raikkonen's luck has deserted him.

The Ferrari driver has come third twice and failed to finish in Spain after his season-opening win at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Finn will start from 16th position in Sunday's race after damaging his suspension in the second 15-minute session of qualifying.

"I lost the back end going into the slower part by the pool and got out of shape and hit the guard rail," Raikkonen said. "I hit the wall pretty hard. "

He went over two more curbs and then nearly ran into the barrier heading around the next-to-last turn of the circuit, before struggling to get back to the pits.

Teammate Felipe Massa nearly hit him coming around the turn, but avoided a crash by slowing past Raikkonen.

"I just saw the yellow flag," Massa said. "It was a little bit of a moment I just managed to pass by without touching."

Raikkonen had hoped his car could be repaired in time to get back on the track.

"I thought I could still get out again because I though it was only a steering arm, which doesn't take long to repair," he said. "In pushing the mechanics to try to do it, we didn't realise the bottom wishbone was broken as well - and that was it."
