Raikkonen drops out of second practice session

Silverstone:

Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren-Mercedes was forced to abandon Saturday's second practice session at the British Grand Prix when his engine stalled on the second lap. In the first session an hour earlier, the Finn was the quickest - and he was among the quickest in Friday's practice. It was not immediately clear if he blew an engine, or had electrical or mechanical problems. Under F1 rules, if he has to replace the engine before qualifying later Saturday, he is penalized 10 places on Sunday's starting grid. In Saturday's first practice session, Raikkonen was quickest with a time of 1 minute, 20.975 seconds. He was followed by Renault's Fernando Alonso (1:21.402) and BAR-Honda's Jenson Button (1:21.996). In the second session, season points leader Alonso was quickest in 1:20.077, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya of McLaren-Mercedes (1:20.128) and Toyota's Jarno Trulli (1:20.449). Raikkonen, the winner of three of the last six races, had to replace his engine last week after practice for the French Grand Prix. He rallied from 13th to finish a distant second behind Alonso, and might have given the Spaniard a contest if not for the malfunction. Raikkonen is on a roll. The Finn has closed in on Alonso but still trails him by 24 points. Alonso has 69 points, followed by Raikkonen (45) and Schumacher (40) of Ferrari. (AP)
