Donington, England:
Dani Pedrosa set a lap record to claim his third pole position of the year in Saturday's qualifying session at the British Grand Prix. The Spaniard's time of 1 minute 27.676 seconds was almost half a second faster than Chris Vermeulen of Austria who clocked 1:28.158. Italian Marco Melandri claimed third spot on Sunday's starting grid with a lap time of 1:28.205. Pedrosa, who dominated opening practice Friday, shattered Colin Edwards' track record, set in 2004, by more than two seconds. Six-time defending champion Valentino Rossi, racing with a broken wrist and bruised ribs suffered in a crash at the Dutch Grand Prix, will start 12th on the grid after a lap time of 1:28.808. Current standings leader Nicky Hayden will be lining up next to Rossi, after his time of 1:28.509 placed him 11th. Pedrosa is currently second in the leader standings on 102 points, some 42 points behind Hayden. Loris Capirossi of Italy is third on 100 points, while Rossi, who won here last year, lies two points behind Capirossi in fourth. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
