The Nissan World Series is unofficially called the Formula 2, since its supposed to be a stepping stone to the Formula 1 circuit. Therefore the news that Narain Karthikeyan has won his first race at the Nissan series can only mean more success for the fastest Indian in the world. Karthikeyan finished third in the standings. The win was his first in the Nissan Series and a first in almost six years. Formula 1 bid With this victory, Karthikeyan will be hoping to maintain the form, as he bids to become the first Indian to compete in Formula 1. The 25-year-old tested with both Jordan and Jaguar in 2001. But the lack of corporate sponsorship seems to be holding back his career in the big league. The structure of Formula 1 racing is such that a competitor has to initially pay the team he would like to drive for. Karthikeyan's expenses each year currently add up to about Rs 2 crore. Part of that money currently comes from TATA, JJ Tyres, Red Bull and Speed Petrol. And more wins on the Nissan circuit could hopefully mean better sponsors.
