London:

Eddie Irvine looks like he has driven his last Formula One race. The 37-year-old Irvine, who made his F1 debut with Jordan in 1993, has been turned down in an attempt to return to Jordan after being fired after last season by Jaguar. Eddie Jordan, whose team is the only one in F1 with a driver vacancy, is looking for a driver who can bring sponsorship money to the cash-strapped team. Brazilian Felipe Massa is the leading candidate to team with Giancarlo Fisichella. Massa was fired last year by Sauber. "It's a sad day for Formula One that Eddie can't continue,'' Jordan said. Irvine finished ninth in the F1 standings last season and has won four races in his GP career. In 1999 he teamed with Michael Schumacher and was runner-up to series champion Mika Hakkinen of McLaren. "When Eddie and I were driving together at Ferrari we got along very well and had a lot of fun, very likely because we are so different," Schumacher said on Thursday while testing in Barcelona. "I think it is not only me who will miss him. There will be a piece of glamour disappearing from Formula One," he added. (AP)
