Karlstad:

Marcus Gronholm holds a wafer-thin lead over 2003 world champion Petter Solberg after the first leg of the Rally of Sweden in Karlstad on Friday. The Finn, driving a Peugeot, won just two of the day's seven stages. But his total time of 58 minutes 20.8 seconds was two-tenths faster than his Subaru rival and the pair are ten seconds clear of current world champion Sebastian Loeb in a Citoroen. Gianluigi Galli of Italy, the experienced Belgian Francios Duval and Markko Martin of Estonia fill the next three places. Thirteen more stages await the field before the winner of the 2005 Rally of Sweden is announced on Sunday. (AP)
