Maranello, Italy:

The 2004 Formula One season starts on Sunday with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. There have been yet more rule changes, and more pronouncements from the sport's supremo Bernie Ecclestone on the way the honours will go. But whatever Ecclestone might believe, Ferrari and Michael Schumacher are still the combination to beat. He may have won the Formula One driver's title a record six times, but Michael Schumacher isn't finished yet. The German has said that the hunger for success still burns fiercely, and he certainly wasn't holding back in recent testing in Mugello. Schumacher begins his defence of the title at Melbourne on Sunday -- Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone thinks that Kimi Raikonnen might pose a serious challenge this season. The Finn certainly did last year, finishing just two points adrift. But Schumacher might just produce another vintage year like 2002 where he stormed to the title with a record 144 points and eleven wins. There are other considerations to be made. Yet again, the rules have been tinkered with -- engine technology one of he key areas this time round. Pit lanes will also be shortened -- who knows what part such factors might play. Rubens Barrichello is there as Schumacher's back-up again. But it's the Brazilian's steady, often unspectacular performances that ensure Ferrari are number one amongst the constructors. (AP)
