The eighth stage of the Dakar Rally was cancelled on Friday due to sandstorms in the Mauritanian desert. The stage between Tichit and Tidjikja, which was expected to be the toughest route of the event, had already been shortened from 520 km to 130 km with competitors due to set off later than planned because of the bad weather. The stage was supposed to go from Tichit and Tidjikja and was to have been the toughest route of the event. But then on Friday morning, just one hour before the bikes were due to depart, organisers decided that racing would not take place. Instead, the journey was to be treated as a liaison section. Peterhansel leads Stephane Peterhansel in the car category now carries his overall lead into Saturday's stage nine, after coming home fastest in Thursday's special. Luc Alphand and German driver Jutta Kleinschmidt stand behind him in the standings. David Fretigne leads the bike standings, having won Thursday's special stage, ahead of Marc Coma and Cyril Despres.
