Chennai:

A group of engineering students have designed a formula racing car to vie for honours in Ferrari land. And this was the only team to qualify in the Asian region.

The car is a 280-kilo single-seater racing model designed and built by four engineering students in Chennai.

But for its 100 BHP Honda CBR 600 RR engine, the entire machine from the chassis to the intake manifold have been custom designed by the team, spending over Rs ten lakh.

The attempt is to race in ferrari's engineering competition in italy and this is reportedly the only entry to qualify in the whole of asia.

While the event carries a maximum prize of around 15,000 euros or approximately Rs 8 lakh, there's something more than money that drives these youngsters.

"I have always wanted to become a race engineer. And this cahance to race at the ferrari land could get me selected. If I'm the best I'd be picked up," said Rachit Agarwal, Team Hindustan.

"Give them a tip, they were so quick to come out with great ideas and designs in the morning," said Krupesh S Patel, Auto Expert, Automobile Expert.

The car will be put to its ultimate test for its endurance, acceleration, fuel economy and its performance on the skid pad.

While the designers were happy with its maiden performance, the model is all set to be airlifted to ferrari land.

It's a big gamble for the young Chennai team. But they believe it means a lot to the development of motorsports in India.

This attempt could make formula racing cars lot cheaper and lighter in the years to come.
