Suzuka, Japan:
Finn Kimi Raikkonen was left with an uphill battle in his championship chase after a late rain shower on Saturday put Rubens Barrichello in pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix. McLaren-Mercedes driver Raikkonen was unable to do any better than eighth place but his hopes were lifted slightly as Michael Schumacher, himself hampered by the slippery track, finished down in 14th spot. Raikkonen was driving team-mate David Coulthard's car after crashing his in practice and was beaten by the seventh-placed Scot to leave him with a tough task to win the race and have any chance of taking the title. Ferrari driver Barrichello's time of one min 31.713 secs beat Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya as the pair both helped their teams in their battle for the constructors' world championship.
