Rayomand Banajee clinched the top place in the premium Formula LGB category in the penultimate leg of the J K Tyre National Motor Racing championship here today to race ahead of closest rival Ameya Walavalkar in the overall standings. With Walvalkar trailing Banajee by just three points, the champion's title is still up for grabs in this ninth edition of the national racing championship. While Banajee has tallied 92 points after the six legs, Pune boy Walvalkar has 89 to his credit. The race today at the MMST track at Irrungattukottai track near here witnessed some high quality stuff, with the drivers displaying some spectacular manouevrings and touching breakneck speeds on both the full track (3.7km) and the short track (2.1 km). Competing in the first race in the Formula LGB, Banajee showed his skills to grab the lead despite starting fifth on the grid and having to face a tough fight from Walvalkar in the finishing laps. In the action-packed second race, it was Aditya Patel all the way as he grabbed a start-to-finish win while Banajee clawed his way back from fifth to finish third to retain his lead in the championship table. Banajee was leading in the Formula Maruti category as well after finishing third in this section today and taking his tally to 81. Amitrajit Ghosh, who finished second, was warned for a wrong overtaking and hitting a co-driver from the rear. The Esteem category saw championship leader Ayub Khan and K E Kumar continue their duel for the championship title. (PTI)
