Sydney:

Australian Chris Atkinson has re-signed with the Subaru team for the 2006 World Rally Championship. The 25 year-old will have Glenn Macneall as his co-driver, and plans to compete in all 16 rounds next year. Atkinson's best finishes in his inaugural year in 2005 were a third-place finish in Japan, fourth in Rally Australia held a week ago and a seventh in New Zealand. He had 15 stage wins, eclipsed this year only by 2005 series champion Sebastien Loeb and former winners Marcus Gronholm and Petter Solberg of Norway. "You can't expect too much in your first year. The fact that we are fourth in the stage wins shows we have got the speed, which is very promising for the future," he said in a statement. Atkinson finished in 12th place in the series championship with 13 points. (AP)
