Andretti impresses again

Watkins Glen:

Marco Andretti continued to build on his impressive rookie IndyCar season by clocking the third-fastest lap time in practice for the Watkins Glen Grand Prix on Friday. ''It's a track I'm more familiar with,'' said Andretti, who tested alone here for nearly seven hours a month ago. ''Hopefully, it can give me the momentum I'm needing.'' Five days after finishing second in the Indianapolis 500, Andretti was clocked at 133.067 mph (214.104 kph) on his final lap of the day, beaten only by Brazilian road-racing aces Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan in the first two rounds of practice in preparation for Sunday's race. Momentum? It's something Andretti already seems to have. ''I guess Indy gave him a little boost, huh?'' said Castroneves, who had a fast lap of 133.792 mph (215.271 kph) over the 3.3-mile (5.4-kilometer), 11-turn road course, just off the track record of 133.806 mph (215.293 kph) he set in winning the pole for last year's race. ''I believe he does have a little momentum from Indy. He seems to understand the car.'' Kanaan was just behind at 133.251 mph (214.400 kph) and barely ahead of his Andretti Green Racing teammate. He was not surprised. ''A lot of people at the beginning of the year tried to put him (Marco) on the spot,'' Kanaan said. ''I wish when I was 19 I had his maturity. He's done a great job. I have a lot of work to do. I'm going to have to raise my game up a bit more. With his first Indianapolis 500 victory safely in his rearview mirror, Sam Hornish Jr. had no trouble focusing on the next race, despite the hectic aftermath of his stunning triumph. (AP)
