AJ Allmendinger won his fifth race of the season, taking the chequered flag in the Champ Car Grand Prix of Road America on Sunday. The race featured a horrifying crash involving Katherine Legge and a bit of trouble for the other teams too. Andrew Ranger, in the number-27 car, bumped into Will Power, sending him spinning off the track. On lap 39, the number-4 car of Nelson Philippe had handling problems, caused by a loose left rear tyre which then came off and rolled down the track. Crash marred race There were five laps left in the race when rookie driver Katherine Legge of England was involved in a frightening crash. As she approached a turn, part of her rear wing flew off the car. At that point, Legge lost down-force and essentially became a passenger. The car slammed into the concrete wall and fence at 180-miles per hour, and her car broke apart in a shower of parts. Legge was fully conscious and was able to walk into the infield medical care facility on her own. Amazingly, not long after the crash, Legge was seen outside the medical centre, on her feet, smiling and waving. Perhaps even more incredible, though not to other drivers, she said she was ready to climb right back into her car if she could. The race was red-flagged for forty-two minutes following the crash.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
