Abu Dhabi:

Sebastian Vettel was forced to retire from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday after his car punctured shortly after the start of the race.

It was the first time that the young German, who has already clinched the drivers' world title for the second straight year, had failed to finish a race this season and ends his quest to match Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins in the 2004 season.

Vettel started on pole position for a record-equalling 14th time at the Yas Marina circuit and he got off well to take the lead.

But on the second corner the right rear tyre of his Red Bull punctured and after continuing on to complete the first lap, he came into the pits and retired from the race with a damaged wheel.

The last time that Vettel failed to finish a race was 20 races ago at the 2010 South Korean Grand Prix.
