Berlin:

France captain Zinedine Zidane has won the Golden Ball award for the most valuable player in the World Cup 2006 in Germany. The gifted son of Algerian immigrants won the award despite being sent off for head butting Marco Materazzi in the final on Sunday. Zidane polled over two thousand points in the vote by journalists covering the World Cup, beating Italians Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Pirlo in the ballot. The ageing playmaker, featuring in the last match of his illustrious career, though left the stage in tears after an ill-tempered World Cup final that Italy won on penalties.
