WC play-off: Swiss get hostile reception

Istanbul:

Tensions have risen ahead of the second leg of the Switzerland-Turkey World Cup qualifying play-off, which takes place in Istanbul on Wednesday. The Turkish Football Association have complained that Swiss supporters whistled and jeered during the Turkish national anthem. It also alleged mistreatment of the Turkish players and their coach Fatih Terim by security officials at the first leg. Switzerland, who won the first leg 2-0, arrived at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul on Monday to an angry reception from local fans. According to Turkish media, the Swiss entourage spent two hours in passport control and baggage reclaim while police used sniffer dogs to inspect the luggage of the players. And there were angry scenes as the Swiss boarded the team coach, with fans chanting abuse and holding obscene banners. Ill-feeling has been stirred up after complaints from the Turkish Football Association regarding both the treatment of their players and coach Fatih Terim, and also the behaviour of Swiss fans during the playing of the Turkish national anthem. Turkey's football federation (TFF) has alleged that Swiss security officials shouted at Turkey's players on their way to the dressing room after the match. It also alleged that force was used to prevent Fatih Terim from entering the room where the post-match news conference was being held. Switzerland secured victory in the first leg with goals from Philippe Senderos and Valon Behrami, and are the favourites to qualify for next summer's World Cup finals in Germany. (AP)
