Valencia downs Celta 2-0

Madrid:

Francisco Perez Rufete scored twice as Valencia blanked struggling Celta de Vigo 2-0 in the Spanish league as tributes to the 200 people killed in a terrorist attack were held at stadiums around the country. The win moved 2002 champion Valencia to within four points of leader Real Madrid with 10 rounds remaining. A minute of silence was observed at all matches, while at some stadiums grief was shown through prayers, floral tributes and banners bearing black sashes. Players wore black armbands and most goal scorers gestured toward the sky in memory of those who died Thursday in Madrid. In other 28th-round games, FC Barcelona topped last-place Murcia 2-0 for its eighth straight league victory and moved into third place, nine points behind archrival Madrid. Also, Deportivo de La Coruna slipped to fourth place after losing to lowly Mallorca 4-2. Deportivo stays 11 points behind Madrid and is virtually out of the title race. Madrid has 61 points, while Valencia has 57. Barcelona has 52, while Deportivo remains with 50. (AP)
