Spanish League champions Valencia gave new coach Claudio Ranieri a winning start to his second term in charge at the Mestalla Stadium on Monday. Valencia held off a spirited second half challenge from Villarreal to win 2-1. Headed goals from Carlos Marchena and Ruben Baraja were enough. Villarreal's new signing Diego Forlan pulled one back for the visitors but Valencia held on. (AP)
